They all said oppression would come in the form of the government, the corporations, or even an invading army. Yes, in the blind crusades against all these entities, they forgot the thing that they had in common. They were all made up of people. And now, I know. The true oppressor of the people is the people. They didn’t know any better, of course, until it was too late. But hindsight does not solve the problem. I look around myself, in this supposed Utopia, and I see that it is one of the greatest horrors mankind has ever created. I now hide, writing this, in the rubble of an old, abandoned building. Something destroyed long ago nobody remembers. Perhaps it was once important, as I see remains of artwork and books. Things from another age which I never knew existed. I write this message now in hopes that it will be preserved, and some day found, by someone who can change this. Someone to defeat the dystopia we have created. I found records, hidden from the public by vote, about why we created this world. Historically, the world was full of injustices, discrimination against people based on trivial things, and war. War, a practice where two or more groups of people would all run out and kill each other. Seemed barbaric by definition. But for some reason, despite efforts for peace, nobody could stop fighting from occurring again for long. Sometime in the far past, a nation was created with the ideals of justice, freedom, and equality. Their existence was a result of a war, and despite my horror at discovering what war was, looking into the history of this war, I began to understand it. These people gave their lives for these ideals, and surely there was more of a reason to that than mindless barbarism. As I read through history, wars continued to change as men fought alongside machines. Everything kept escalating until an explosion rocked the world. A single bomb that could take out a city, anywhere in the world. This made open conflict between large nations cease out of fear of mutually assured destruction. But then wars found a new way to exist. Small groups of extremists were suddenly a match for standing armies using guerrilla tactics and civilian attacks. People around the world constantly made cries for peace without knowing what it would get them. Eventually, millions and millions of people started protesting collectively the governments and nations and corporations, as scapegoats for the human nature that drove them all. Everyone joined the cause quickly, as communications were flooded by people following the cause; anyone who didn’t was the enemy, and nobody wanted to be the enemy. All the government and business was just evil, because everyone said they were, so they must have been, or you were the enemy, and nobody wanted to be the enemy. By the time a year had passed, the leaders of this revolution stepped down, stating that it would be hypocritical for them to continue leading. The entire group began calling itself a nation, the United People for Peace and Equal Rights, also known as the UPPER. A complete democracy was created, where every member voted equally and was treated equally. Quickly, the UPPER movement gained unprecedented support. Governments worldwide realized that this new nation was a threat, a massive, mindless, brainwashed horde of youth who didn’t understand their own cause, and as people continued to join the movement, UPPER became a threat. Many nations sent riot teams to disperse the increasingly large protests which clogged the streets day and night. Some, more violent leaders ordered their military to turn on the protesters, but the armies were small as many had deserted to join UPPER. Eventually, UPPER controlled nearly the population of the entire world, and they held a large series of votes on how to fix problems such as violence, discrimination, poverty, disease, and hunger. The solution was simple, of course. Everyone had to share things equally, avoid severe disagreements, give up any weapons, and of course, remove anything that could allow discrimination. The skin, eye, and hair colors of every person was recorded and made into an average. Everyone had their bodies completely recolored by specialized machines to eliminate any sense of difference. Next, everyone was modified to average height, weight, and so on. Every human was engineered to flawless conformity, so nobody would ever discriminate based on appearance. Any signs of religion were destroyed in masses by the people. Everyone was given identical clothing. In the end, there was nothing to distinguish people.
